Captivating. Historic. Suspense. Drama.

These are some words that come to mind when I think about Ayesha Harruna Attah’sHundred Wells of Salaga.

Although I prefer reading (auto)biographies, once I heard about Ayesha’s new book, I couldn’t wait to get a copy. I read her first novelHarmattan Rain some years ago and I absolutely loved it! So I was excited to find out what her latest novel was all about. Thanks to Ehanom online bookstore, I was able to get a copy a few weeks after the book was released.

What a story! The two main characters, Aminah and Wurche, take us along the journey of their lives which although at first glance seem worlds apart, have more similarities than differences.

The major theme in the book is slavery. Aminah was captured from her home and sold as a slave. Wurche, although a free woman, was enslaved by the cultural limitations of marriage and enshrined gender roles. Both longed to be free. Free to be their true selves and to chart the course of their lives in freedom.

Ayesha intersperses the historical account of colonialism, slavery and inter-tribal wars with the taboo subject of sexual desire: mind-blowing sex, less-than-stellar sex and even same sex attraction.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. Ayesha’s writing style is engaging and indeed captivating. She is an audacious writer who is not afraid to yank the cover off the well-hidden (and unspoken) secrets of our society – gender inequality, sexual escapades and conquest.

This book is definitely a must-read. Contact BookNook Bookstore now for your copy and lose yourself in the intriguing story.

There's nothing like afternoon tea with a good book :-)
